Finance-related classes for adults planned in Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — The Community Education division of Silver Creek Central School District is offering a few finance-related sessions for area adults via its fall 2019 programming. All these courses will be led by Brett Komm, a wealth manager with Cetera Investors, and held in the high school library on Dickinson Street.

¯ Savvy Social Security Planning for Baby Boomers will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17, or Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. The session will focus on what Baby Boomers need to know to maximize retirement income. Topics include: Will Social Security be there for me? How much can I expect to receive? When should I apply for Social Security? How can I maximize my benefits? Will Social Security be enough to live on in retirement?

¯ Savvy Medicare Planning will be held Thursday, Oct. 10 or Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Topics include: How Medicare enrollment periods work — and what you need to do to avoid late-enrollment penalties. How much you can expect to pay in health care costs after going onto Medicare. How Medicare works with private insurance to provide comprehensive coverage. Why most people pay too much for private insurance and how you can avoid excess costs. Why you must plan for higher health care costs in retirement — including the possibility of needing long-term care.

¯ Savvy Social Security Planning for Women will be held Thursday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. Topics include: How can I maximize my Social Security benefits? Are there survivor benefits if my husband or ex-husband dies? If I get divorced, are there divorced-spouse benefits? How can I best coordinate retirement benefits with my husband? What Social Security planning should I consider before remarrying?

¯ Savvy IRA Planning will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. Topics include: What type of retirement account is right for me? Can I still contribute to a retirement account and if so, how much? When do I need to take withdrawals and how much do I have to take? How are my IRA withdrawals taxed? How does my IRA fit into my overall plan? What happens to my IRA when I die? How can I minimize taxes so I can spend more of my hard-earned money?

There is no fee for any of these offerings, but those interested are asked to register for an accurate head count. To register, visit http://www.silvercreekschools.org/ and navigate to the “Community Education” page via the Community option on the homepage to download a registration form. To register by phone, call 951-8111 and leave a message with your name, number, and the name of your course(s). You will not receive a confirmation call. If the course is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be called. Send in your money promptly with the registration form and your course fees. (Include separate checks for each person.) You are not permanently registered until we receive your course fee. Money must be received before the class begins. Checks or money orders can be made out to: Silver Creek CS Community Ed. Those age 65 and older qualify for a 15% discount.
