Opera House to present next history lecture Thursday

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present “Land Riot!” as the sixth talk in its 2019 Chautauqua County History Lecture Series on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.

Historian Dick Waite will give the illustrated lecture, which replaces the previously scheduled “History of Findley Lake,” now to be presented in a future series.

Many Chautauqua County residents have viewed the arched stone vault which sits on the front lawn of the County Courthouse in Mayville. This vault was built by William Peacock, local agent of the Holland Land Company, who came to Mayville in 1810. In this vault were kept the records of the land company until 1835. Learn the interesting story behind this structure and how it came to remain on the site in this talk.

Admission to the presentation is free, with donations gratefully accepted.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. A complete schedule of Opera House events is available at www.fredopera.org.
