Silver Creek’s Festival of Grapes kicks off Friday

SILVER CREEK -- The Festival of Grapes committees are busy making plans and are looking forward to another wonderful celebration of the grape agriculture in the region. This year, Silver Creek celebrates the festival's 52nd year with many traditional events being planned.
The pentathlon for both girls and boys ages 7 and 8 was held on Tuesday at the Silver Creek High School track. The event featured 15 boys and seven girls competing for prizes that will be announced Friday. The grape dessert/jam contest will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Church, 135 Central Ave., Silver Creek. There will be adult categories of grape pie, grape dessert, and grape preserve/jam. Also, there will be a kid's grape creations category for those 12 and under; the amateur winemaking/tasting contest will also be held that morning at the church.
Other events include: Delicious foods with a craft fair in the park, rides and amusements in the downtown ballpark, live entertainment and the presentation of the Grape Grower of the Year award.
On Friday, the festival kicks off with the rededication of the village fountain at 5 p.m., with the opening ceremony following immediately afterwards. When that concludes, the crowd favorite event -- grape stomping -- will commence. Participants' goals are to be the fastest to fill their bucket with grape juice.
The big Festival of Grapes Parade will be held Sunday afternoon with many bands, floats, firetrucks and marchers.
The village and festival organizers hope to see many participants. Festival of Grapes Headquarters will be open extended hours throughout the weekend for all those who are interested, beginning on Friday, the hours of the Festival of Grapes Headquarters will be 12-9 p.m. and expanded hours will also take place on Saturday, from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. as well as Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. When the festival opens on Friday through Sunday, the ticket price for amusement rides will be $20 per ticket and will only be available at the ticket booth operated by the amusement company. The Festival Headquarters is located at 9 Park Place around the village square.
Throughout the three-day event, souvenirs such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, hats and many other grape related souvenirs will be available for purchase. The organizers have a wonderful selection of souvenirs and gifts for festival goers of all ages, remember to ask about their daily weekend specials and to take advantage of special discounted prices or bundled gift packs.
