Dunkirk Yacht Club holds fall banquet

The Dunkirk Yacht Club installed its 2020 officers and directors at their fall banquet at Shorewood Country Club on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The invocation was delivered by Life Member Tom Lafferty. Outgoing Commodore Bob Price thanked the board and everyone for all their support in making a successful 2019 season. He also thanked his wife, Mary, for all her help and support, presenting her with a bouquet of roses. He then introduced incoming Commodore Carl Lis, who announced the officers for 2020, presenting them with the flags of their offices: Vice Commodore – Dennis Wolfe; Rear Commodore – Carl Hamann; Past Commodore – Price; Treasurer – Carl Waclawski; Secretary – Greg Kowal. Also serving on the board will be: Education – Alan Freville; Facilities – Dan Cassidy; House – Michele Bernatz; Membership – Jay Bishop; Race and Recreation – Tom Safford; and Social – Jim Christy. Appointed were: Dockmaster – Carl Bjurlin; Web Master – Larry Van Deusen; and Newsletter – Chris Piede.

Chairman Rich Cowan reported much membership activity in 2019, most notably five members were granted life membership for having been in DYC for 25 years: Jerry Bradigan, Judy Olson, Ron Pachol, Mark Maytum and Pat Damore. 12 new members were admitted. However, three members passed away: Life members Warren McPherson and Frank Napieralski, and Senior Member Einer Wheel were remembered.

Race & Recreation chair Safford announced racing winners. The Memorial Day Trophy to Carl Bjurlin on “S’Urchin Too!,” with crew – Tina Rausa and Marv Bjurlin; 4th of July Race – Rich Cowan on “Offline” – crew Joanne Cowan; Commodore’s Poker Run & Race – Tina Rausa on “S’Urchin Too!”; Ladies Champaign Race – Tina Rausa on “S’Urchin Too!” and crew Joan Tallett; Labor Day Race – Carl Bjurlin (solo) on “S’Urchin Too!” This year “Van’s Legacy Trophy” went to Carl Bjurlin. Safford also thanked John Ludwig for being skipper for the race boat this season.

Jim Christy, speaking for all members of last year’s dock repair team who had been given the award, presented this year’s “T” Cup to Dan Cassidy, for his work keeping the club in good shape, and planning further projects to maintain and improve it.

The committee for the evening’s arrangements was recognized and thanked: Wally and Carol Gotowka, Tom and Mary Wik, and Tom and Carol Prevet. The music for the evening was provided by “The Untouchables.”
