WESTFIELD — Women seeking OBGYN care in Western New York now have another option, thanks to a new Midwifery Program provided by OBGYN Associates — Westfield Office, at Westfield Memorial Hospital (WMH).

The group of experienced certified nurse midwives provide care, education counseling and support to women and newborns during their pregnancy delivery and the postpartum period. Midwives also provide well-woman care and preventative health services for women of all ages.

The midwife group includes Julie Schwab, MSN, CNM; Margaret Boyd, DNP, CNM; Kara Matkovich, MSN, CNM; and Heather Mozdy, MSN, CNM.

“Offering a midwifery program at WMH is part of Allegheny Health Network and WMH’s commitment to keeping care local for patients in our community,” said WMH President, Karen Surkala. “It is also a key strategy in creating a comprehensive women’s care program for women in our region.”

The hospital cut the ribbon on a new obstetrics and gynecology practice in September — a collaboration between WMH and OBGYN Associates of Erie — Westfield Office. The practice is located on the hospital’s second floor and is staffed by an all-female physician team, as well as the all-female midwife team.

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) are required to complete a nursing degree (either an RN or BSN) in midwifery as well as a specialty master’s degree in nursing with a concentration in midwifery. They must then pass a board certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board and their practice is regulated by the state in which they practice. They must be re-certified every five years through AMCB and meet specific continuing education requirements.
