Icy conditions cause numerous accidents

Icy conditions have contributed to a number of major and minor accidents across the region this morning.

One of the most severe accidents happened across the state line in Pennsylvania near the North East exit on Interstate 90. Chautauqua County Emergency Medical Services, the Ripley Fire Department and Westfield Fire Department assisted in the multi-vehicle accidents in the eastbound lanes not far from the Interstate 86 interchange.

The accident occurred around 8:15 and closed eastbound lanes with traffic rerouted to U.S. 20. Tractor-trailers were off the road and a number of vehicles were impacted in the mishap.

Closer to home, a two-vehicle accident with minor injury was reported in the westbound lanes of the Thruway near Silver Creek around 9 a.m. Both Irving and Silver Creek fire departments responded.

Around 8:40, a motor vehicle accident where a car struck a pole was reported on Route 20 in the town of Sheridan. Both Sheridan Fire and Chautauqua EMS were on the scene until nearly 10 a.m.

Additionally, another car was reported to have struck a tree on the Thruway around 10:30 in Sheridan. Fredonia Fire responded to the call and had cleared the scene by 11.

A lake-effect snow warning begins early Sunday and lasts until Monday morning. Once the sleet stops, heavy lake effect snow is possible with accumulations of 7 to 14 inches and wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
