High winds arrive today; flooding possible near Lake Erie
Here come the winds.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts as high as 55 mph are likely today as a blizzard warning remains in effect for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties. Overnight, rain turned into snow around 10 p.m.
Fredonia Mayor Douglas Essek closed Fredonia Village Hall and announced this afternoon the travel advisory has been lifted.
An advisory from the National Weather Service this morning also warned of flooding near the Lake Erie shores. The agency reported the lake’s water level has risen 3 feet and will continue to rise as the winds increase. That means flooding is likely at the Dunkirk harbor.
