Bud ‘n Bloom holds March meeting

Submitted Photos Judy Kawski turned her kitchen into a workshop for the March meeting of the Bud ‘n Bloom garden club. Kawski demonstrates the construction of a moss ball.

Driving up to the Brocton home of Al and Judy Kawski, for their March meeting of the Bud n’ Bloom Garden Club, it was very evident that spring was around the corner.

In the center of the circular driveway, the brick-lined garden circle in front of the big barn contained perfectly trimmed ornamental grasses starting to sprout and yellow daffodils ready to pop with a few more days of warm sun.

Nearby, the gazebo was surrounded by mounds of white snow drops. In the near distance, the last rays of daylight reflected on the small pond that was circled with thin white birch trees. Bunches of white Crocuses accented the flower beds next to the door leading into the home.

Twelve members of the club gathered in the spacious living room where Spats, the family cat welcomed visitors. On the coffee table was a bunch of snowdrops, transplanted from outdoors and replanted in a bowl to bring a touch of spring to the gathering. Also, on the wall was a large painting of pots of spring flowers.

President Penny Deakin called the business meeting to order. Angeline Smith Leone gave a brief summary of the February meeting.

Plans were made for the transplanting of pansies, coleus and herbs to be used for the plant sale at the May Farmers’ Market in Fredonia, planned for May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm ( Check the OBSERVER for changing information ) Lucy Hurley will chair the calling committee for teams of transplanters.

Fliers advertising the plant sale were to be available at the Studio on Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Member Sallie Muscato volunteered to create and be the distribution spot for the fliers. ( Availability is uncertain at this time).

The Installation of Officers Banquet advertised for April 28 at the White Village has been postponed until further notice Muscato and Janet Center are the co-chairwomen for this event.

Judy Kawski then directed a demonstration (with accompanying printed directions) for members in her country kitchen, adorned with a rich, antique kettle, bowl and pitcher copper collection. On another wall hung another precious collection consisting of a wooden pitch fork, rake, washboards, rug beater, and other old-time memorabilia.

During the Kokedama (Moss Ball) workshop, Kawski replanted a bare root purple Passion Plant in a Bonsai and peat moss mixture. Then she wrapped the ball with a layer of soaking wet Spagnum Moss. She then fastened it with fish line and added more line to hang the ball. This can be hung indoors by a window or outdoors in the warm months. It was given as a door prize to a member in attendance.

Kawski then served a delicious, light lemon bisque dessert topped with blueberries; coffee and tea around her dining room table. The linen tablecloth was accented with three floral square paintings with matching pink plates, cups and floral napkins.

Upon exiting for the evening, Kea and Kenzy, the family’s Sheltie dogs, greeted members’ goodbye with wagging tails and excited wiggles around the room.
