County looks to lease cell tower, replace security doors
Chautauqua County is moving ahead with a plan to collect revenue from Verizon by leasing out part of a cell tower.
Both the legislature’s Public Safety and Audit and Control committee meetings, lawmakers agreed to the authorization execution of a lease agreement with Verizon Wireless at the county-owned tower on Oak Hill Road in the town of Carroll for $4,250. Final approval is required tonight by the full legislature.
According to the resolution, Verizon wants to operate and maintain various communications equipment and an antenna on the tower.
Undersheriff Darryl Braley said the lease is for five years. “This is the first lease we’ve had with them at that site. We’ve got another lease at Hardscrabble (Road, Westfield) and another one in Ellicott,” he told members of the Audit and Control Committee.
Committee Chairman Chuck Nazzaro, D-Jamestown, noted there will not be any additional cost for the county.
In other business, both committees approved the installation of new exterior doors at the security entrance at the Gerace Office Building.
Brad Bentley, county Department of Public Works director, noted that the doors are no longer closing properly, making it difficult to lock and unlock, and also causing alarms to go off.
Bentley said the doors are both old and poorly designed. “The doors are extra tall and very weighty,” he said. “The weight of the doors just continually pull the doors down, causing them to misalign.”
The replacement will cost $38,500. This will include redesigning the doors, so they will last longer.
The full legislature will need to give final approval at its meeting tonight. If approved, Bentley said the doors will be replaced before winter.
