Dunkirk announces rental, mortgage assistance program

The City of Dunkirk and Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. are making available funding to assist city residents with up to three months of past due rent or mortgage payments.

Those eligible must have suffered a loss of income due to COVID-19. This assistance is available to individuals and families whose household income is less than 80% of the area median income.

Area median incomes are $37,650 for a one person household, $43,000 for two, $48,400 for three, $53,750 for four and $58,050 for five. The household must be considered “rent burdened,” which is defined as paying more than 30% of gross monthly income towards rent.

Those who are interested should contact Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. immediately by calling 366-8176, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and ask to speak to a navigator about the city of Dunkirk Rent/Mortgage Relief Program.

This funding is limited and available at a first come first service basis. The city of Dunkirk will also be sending out foreclosure prevention and rental and mortgage assistance informational postcards to all City residents within the coming weeks.
