County lands grant to address lead based paint

Chautauqua County has received a $3 million Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction grant for Chautauqua County homes.

The money, which is being disbursed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will help the county address lead hazards in 140 housing units for low-income families with children.

“We care about making sure underserved communities and working families have access to safe housing,” said U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning. “Now, we can ensure 140 families in Chautauqua County can enjoy their homes without concern over the harmful impacts of lead poisoning on their loved ones and children. We will continue to fight to support this funding so our district receives the resources it needs to keep folks safe going forward.”

The Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction grant program helps to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in homes that are eligible. For more information, visit HUD.gov.

“The Lead Paint Prevention Programs are an important part of the work our County Environmental Health Division performs,” said County Executive PJ Wendel. “This additional funding will help identify and remediate many more homes where lead paint is still present and help to keep children in those homes safe. I thank Congressman Reed for his assistance in bringing this funding to Chautauqua County.”
