Family Video to close Jamestown location
Family Video is closing its Jamestown location.
The 605 N. Main St. video rental store announced it is ending local operation and that all movies, games and fixtures are available for sale. The store is no longer renting movies, and the last day to buy merchandise is Oct. 25.
Family Video announced earlier it was closing its Dunkirk store at 1190 Central Ave. Adam Chase, district manager for New York, said in a recent interview that movies will be available to rent until Sept. 13 and the store has a planned closing date of Oct. 25.
At the time, Chase said the Jamestown location would remain open. Those plans have apparently changed.
Chase explained previously, “We obviously depend on the movie industry, and more specifically, movies released in theaters. They have a box office contract and contracts to release to DVD, and with theaters closed for so long, it’s been a pretty extreme lack of newly-released movies.”
In fact, rentals of new releases make up a significant portion of Family Video’s business, and Chase said that the Dunkirk store was profitable before it closed in March.
“Most of our customers want to watch current, new big blockbuster titles,” he explained. “Rather than purchase a $25 DVD that they might watch once or twice, they can rent it for a fraction of the price. There are always people who are a little more invested in choosing their entertainment, not just watching whatever is on Netflix.”
Officials cut ribbon on the Jamestown location in July 2006. At the time of its opening, the store employed 12 people including two full-time managers.
Marco’s Pizza, which had been located next door to the video rental shop, closed its doors in August 2018. The shuttering was, according to a sign posted on the front door, “due to ever increasing labor costs from the State of New York.”
