Dunkirk woman tapped for Election Commissioner

Luz Torres

Deputy Democratic Election Commissioner Luz Torres of Dunkirk will be going before the Administrative Services Committee on Monday as the recommendation of the Chautauqua County Democratic Committee to replace outgoing Commissioner Norman P. Green.

Following review by the committee, Torres’ recommendation will move on to the full County Legislature for action at its Oct. 28 meeting. If approved, Torres will become the first Hispanic department head in county history.

Torres has worked at the Board of Elections since 2013 and promoted in 2018 to deputy election commissioner. A proud CSEA member, she has headed up the BOE bilingual voting program since her arrival. She also serves as deputy office manager and co-supervises all office functions, including the ballooning of up to 600 workers for Elections Day.

Torres has attended all New York State Board of Elections trainings and acts in the stead of Commissioner Green in his absence. She holds an AAS degree from Jamestown Community College and successfully completed five semesters at Houghton College, majoring in business management.
