Oboe Day, a comprehensive experience for student musicians that will feature special guest Broadway oboist Keve Wilson, along with State University at Fredonia School of Music faculty from Fredonia and alumni, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Members of Fredonia’s Oboe Studio will conduct classes that cover the basics of oboe playing and reeds, how to prepare for All-State competition, repertoire for oboe by diverse composers and also give a recital during the day-long virtual program.

The deadline to register online is Oct. 30. The $10 registration fee is non-refundable.

Ms. Wilson will give two engaging presentations for different age groups on how to succeed as a classical musician.

In “The Band Room to Broadway,” geared for students in fourth through 10th grades, Wilson will redefine the role of a classical musician, combining memories of her high school practice room with stories of life in a Broadway orchestra pit — and the struggles and successes in between.

“So, you Want to be a Freelancer: Creating a Life in Music,” a workshop for 11th graders through college students, will empower musicians through networking, communication and entrepreneurial skills. Wilson will share personal tales from Los Angeles recording studios and Broadway pits to inspire students to discover how they can be the best advocates for their careers after college.

Other sessions include:

¯ In “Hacks/Warm up Exercises,” led by Associate Professor Sarah Hamilton, all attendees are to bring their reeds and instruments and be ready to play and learn how to figure out what’s up with the reed and how to warm up embouchure and fingers.

¯ “Preparing for Solo Festivals,” featuring oboe students Margaret Maxwell and Allison Dana and designed for all attendees, will offer valuable preparation tips that can be applied to solo festivals, auditions and upcoming performances.

The Fredonia Oboe Studio will present a concert featuring works by diverse composers.

Nine Fredonia alumni will outline career paths that encompass occupations that include audio engineer, lighting designer, university associate professor, high school band director, instrumental music teacher, director of orchestras, music therapist, brand specialist and freelance musician, as well as pursuit of a master’s degree in performance and doctorate in composition. The session is for grade 11 through university attendees.

An array of oboe works by diverse composers and discussion of the importance of programming works by underrepresented composers will be explored by Adjunct Lecturer Jamie Sampson, a guest composer and bassoonist, in “Works by Diverse Composers for Oboe,” for grade 11 through university attendees.

A repertoire master class, for all attendees, will conclude Oboe Day. To be considered to perform, submit a recording/video 3 to 5 minutes in length of the music of one’s choice via email no later than Oct. 26 to Dr. Hamilton at sarah.hamilton@fredonia.edu
