Women’s Group sponsors march

The Chautauqua Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group will sponsor the “Pick Love, Unity, and Justice” Chautauqua County Women’s March in Fredonia at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in conjunction with the national women’s march.

The event comes nearly a month after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Chautauqua Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group held a candlelight vigil in honor of Ginsburg recently in Barker Commons which was attended by around 75 people.

“We honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg and join marchers around the nation on Oct. 17 to support those whose voices have been marginalized,” stated event organizers.

The march will begin at Fredonia Village Hall. Participants will walk around Barker Commons, and end at the Barker Gazebo. Speakers have been asked to inspire attendees about the importance and meaning of living in a democracy that values all people.

Because of COVID-19 precautions, the microphone will be sanitized between speakers. Masks and social distancing are absolutely required. Training for volunteers will be held via Zoom.

The idea of using the color purple and the word “pick” is to represent grape country; the combination of red and blue make purple. Weather-appropriate clothing (purple if possible) and signs depicting love, unity, and justice are recommended.
