Fredonia suffers multiple water main breaks

OBSERVER Photo Crews attempt to fix a water main break on Thursday on Main Street near Route 60.

A large water main break in front of Tuscany on Route 20 was creating havoc in the village of Fredonia Thursday.

“Our crews are isolating the break and they’re working on getting a crew over there as we speak,” Fredonia Mayor Doug Essek told the OBSERVER.

The break happened around 3 p.m. at the same time the village is suffering from a second smaller break on Gardner Street.

“The water main break on Gardner Street has been isolated, but they will work on the 12 inch main first to get it isolated and get it repaired and service back as soon as possible,” Essek noted.

When asked how long the repair may take Essek replied that it’s “unknown at this time.”

“They won’t know until they get down in there and see how big the break is and what they have to do and then we’ll determine the time,” Essek added. “They will work as fast as they can, but they do have it isolated so we’re not losing large amounts of water from our water treatment plant and they will repair that as soon as possible.”

At this time Essek asks Fredonia water customers to conserve water usage until further notice due to multiple water main breaks. Travelers on Thursday evening also were being asked to avoid East Main near Route 60.
