120-Bed nursing home project eyed in Lakewood

By Eric Tichy 2 min read

LAKEWOOD -- Randy Holcomb for years had a feeling a development project was in the works -- or at the very least being considered -- on several acres of land in the village.

It appears that project may be a multi-million dollar short-term rehabilitation and long-term skilled nursing facility.

As first reported this week by Buffalo Business First, a 120-bed nursing home is being sought on a little more than 17 acres of land on Fairmount Avenue, nestled between the Fairmount Hills Apartments and a dentist office.

The $25 million project, according to the business journal, would include moving the current Absolut Care of Westfield nursing facility to the new site in Lakewood within the next four years.

Holcomb, now the mayor of Lakewood, was previously the assessor for the town of Busti. Prior to 2015, he said a parcel of land that included the Fairmount Hills Apartments was purchased by Russo Estates LLC and Ciara Estates LLC of Getzville, N.Y. That parcel was then divided, with the apartment complex sold off, and with 17 acres remaining on other parcels.

At the time, Holcomb figured such a purchase likely meant some sort of future development was being considered. News this week that Absolut Care of Westfield could relocate from its 26 Cass St. location to a new development in Lakewood made that hunch make a little more sense.

"We knew something was brewing," Holcomb told The Post-Journal on Thursday. "It was like this puzzle, and this was the corner piece."

The village has not yet been approached by anyone from Absolut or its ownership regarding the project.

"It would obviously be a good project to have in our municipality, and with 17 acres there is plenty of space owned by them," Holcomb said. "It has good access to the road. Of course we would be very happy about it, but of course sad for Westfield. We have been on the losing end of closings, and we don't want to see another municipality go through that."
