The regular monthly meeting of the Benjamin Prescott Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was held at the YWCA in Westfield on Thursday, March 4. There were seven members present. The meeting was called to order at 1:03 p.m. by Regent Brenda Johnson.
The opening ritual was conducted by Regent Johnson. The President General's message was then read by Linda Kuzara. On or before April 1, an announcement will be made concerning the format of Continental Congress, in-person or virtual. April 1 is also important as it is the estimated completion date for the restoration of DAR Constitution Hall. President General Denise Doring VanBuren wishes to thank everyone who has already contributed to the project and mentions that all gifts are appreciated.
The DAR National Defense Article was then read by Elizabeth Sedlmayer. "The Star-Spangled Banner," our national anthem, was written to celebrate the defenders in the Battle of Baltimore in 1814. Written by Francis Scott Key, it is an eyewitness viewpoint of the battle at Fort McHenry. During the 19th century, United States veteran groups used "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the standard song for patriotic celebrations. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the song to be used at all military functions. On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a bill that made "The Star-Spangled Banner" the national anthem.
Registrar Barbara Pietro stated that there are currently three prospective members. Megan Austin has her papers completed and they are ready to be mailed to Washington, D.C.
Regent Johnson mentioned that March is Women's History Month. She also stated that this fall is the 100th. anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Members are reminded to log in their volunteer hours on the DAR National Website. The next scheduled meeting will be on Thursday, April 1 at 1 p.m. at the YWCA in Westfield. Those who had an ancestor who fought for freedom in the Revolutionary War and would like to join the D.A.R. are asked to call Barbara Pietro at 392-1166 or email jbpietro@gmail.com.
