Community reacts to fatal accident

FLUVANNA — The Bemus Point community is mourning the loss of a 22-year-old who died after he was struck while riding his skateboard late Sunday.

The New York State Police said its investigation into the accident remains ongoing. First responders were alerted to a vehicle-pedestrian crash shortly after 9 p.m. on Route 430, west of Fluvanna Townline Road, in the town of Ellery.

According to the state police, a 2011 Chevy Malibu being operated by a 19-year-old was traveling west and struck Bannon Eimiller of Bemus Point, who was also traveling west in the westbound lane while riding a skateboard.

The name of the driver was not released.

“Troopers attempted life saving measures including CPR and utilizing an AED until paramedics arrived,” the state police said. “Eimiller was pronounced deceased and transported to Erie County Medical Center.”

Route 430 was closed to traffic for several hours. The state police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in the investigation.

News of Eimiller’s death resulted in a flood of messages posted to social media.

“My condolences and heartfelt prayers to both families,” one message said. “A terrible tragedy. Rest peacefully young man.”

Another read: “So terribly sad to hear this news. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of both the young driver and Bannon’s family.”

And another: “So very sad for all. Prayers of peace and comfort to them all.”
