City to again sponsor summer day camp

The city of Dunkirk Youth Bureau and Recreation Office will again be sponsoring the “Summer Better Than Others Day Camp” for youth beginning at 5 years old and who have graduated from kindergarten through 11 years old.

The camp offers recreational, athletic and educational experiences for youngsters. Located in the beautiful confines of Camp Gross in Cassadaga, this summer recreational day camp features daily activities such as arts and crafts, games, lifeguard supervised fishing and swimming and theatre.

The maximum youth to staff ratio is 6:1 with the ratio being significantly lower for waterfront activities. Children will be picked up and dropped off at five designated locations in Dunkirk every morning and afternoon. Two staff counselors will be on the bus daily and will be taking an attendance check at each stop. Bus locations will be made available upon registration.

Lunches will be provided by the Summer Feeding Program. The cost for one week of camp for City of Dunkirk residents is $40 per child, with every additional child in the family at $30 per child. For children living outside the city of Dunkirk, fees will be $50 per child and $35 for each additional child.

For junior camp counselors, ages 12 years to 15 years, it will be free.

Camp weeks available are: Week 1: July 12 to 16; Week 2 July 19 to 23; Week 3: July 26 to 30; Week 4: Aug. 2 to 6; Week 5: Aug. 9 to 13.

Registration will be held at the James Murphy Volunteer Fireman’s Training Grounds, Conference Building, 665 Brigham Road, Dunkirk, (corner of Brigham Road and Lucas Avenue); beginning Monday, June 21 to 25 for city of Dunkirk residents from 1 until 4 p.m. June 28 through July 2; non-city residents can also sign up, as well as city of Dunkirk residents.

Parents may sign children up for a maximum of two weeks. Contact Patty in the Recreation Office at 366-9885 with any questions. NO mail-in registrations will be accepted.
