Fredonia-Pomfret Democratic Association announces scholarships

The Fredonia-Pomfret Democratic Association is accepting applications for scholarships. The organization awards two $500 scholarships annually — the Joe Sweeny Scholarship and the JFK Scholarship. The Joe Sweeny scholarship is based upon his never-ending dedication to public service, education, worker’s rights, justice, and equality. He was a teacher for 38 years, and chair of the Social Studies department, within the Dunkirk School System.

A fierce advocate for teachers and students, he served on the NYSUT board for thirty years. Joe was also a proponent of progressive causes and served as chair of the local Democratic Party. In 2004, he was elected as a delegate and attended the Democratic National Convention.

Criteria for the award will include:

¯ At least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

¯ Record of community service as a volunteer in a church, school, or civic organization.

¯ Two references — the applicant is to include two reference letters from people familiar with the candidate’s community service.

¯ A brief essay (one page, double-spaced, about 250 words).

The applicant should choose one of the three essay topics: The importance of Unions: past, present and future; the importance of quality, free, public education for all students; or the importance of progressive and forward-thinking ideas in our country.

The JFK scholarship is based upon John F. Kennedy’s declaration that one person can make a difference in the world. His statement, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” has inspired many. For those inspired to apply for this scholarship:
