Pomfret’s Forest Hill Cemetery gets columbarium

The town of Pomfret’s Forest Hill Cemetery now has a columbarium for cremated remains.

Deputy Town Supervisor Ann Eckman announced pricing for the new feature at this month’s Town Board meeting. Board members approved the pricing.

A columbarium is essentially a large marble block with niches cut into it for placement of urns containing remains. Forest Hill’s columbarium is located not far from the main gate on Lambert Avenue, off to the right near a maintenance building.

It will cost $750 to purchase a single niche, and $1,000 for a double niche that would allow two urns to be placed together.

The town will also collect a $100 fee for opening and closing a niche, $200 if a double interment is happening. There will be an additional $150 fee for weekend work. Eckman said the town Highway Department will open and close the niches.

Niche doors will be covered with plaques that act as gravestones, with information about the deceased. Eckman said A.D. Titus, the longtime grave marker company situated near the cemetery on White Street, will carve the plaques.

Niches are not yet for sale, as cemetery officials are finalizing arrangements, Eckman said. People who want niches in the future can call Cemetery Sexton Ann Renckens at 716-672-7156 or email her at foresthill@townofpomfretny.org.

The columbarium was originally going to be placed close to the cemetery’s Newton Street side. However, that plan was dropped due to unstable ground in the area, and a lack of access for heavy equipment needed to install the hefty structure.
