School 3 celebrates Flag Day

Second-graders learn how to raise flag.
On Tuesday, Dunkirk School 3 celebrated Flag Day. Each class was given the opportunity to meet with local Veterans from the American Legion.
Jim Lemanski, Mike Edwards and Luis Cruz explained the importance of this national holiday, as well as proper flag etiquette. The honored guests made this presentation interactive.
Students were given hands-on experience on how to raise, lower and fold the flag. They also learned the meaning behind the stars, stripes and colors of the American flag. Many questions were asked about what to do with a flag when it becomes damaged.
We learned that it is important to “retire” a flag, once it becomes tattered or faded. If this happens, you can go to the American Legion at 211 Central Ave., ring the bell, and tell them that you have a flag that needs to be properly disposed of. They graciously collect the flags and retire them once a year at a special ceremony.
At the end of each presentation, students placed flags into the ground along the front of the school to show their respect for the stars and stripes. School 3 is proud to show our love for our country! Students and staff were then gathered around a beautiful painted lawn design, by local artist Ruth Conti, to take a whole group photo. Once back inside their classrooms, students were able to cool off with a donated red, white and blue popsicle from Wells Food Corp.

Throughout the remainder of the day, students made patriotic hats, crafts and read stories about this special holiday. School 3 is so grateful to those members in the community who were able to help educate us and make lasting memories to end this 2021-22 school year. Flag Day events were coordinated by Kate Leonardis and Colleen McDonald.
