‘Phantom’ to make movie appearance
“The Phantom of the Open,” stars Oscar winners Mark Rylance, right, and Sally Hawkins.
The next film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is the British comedy “The Phantom of the Open,” starring Oscar winners Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins. It will be screened Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“The Phantom of the Open” is the heartwarming true story of Maurice Flitcroft (Rylance), a dreamer and unrelenting optimist. This humble crane operator from Barrow-in-Furness managed to gain entry to the British Open Golf Championship qualifying in 1976, despite never playing a round of golf before. He shot the worst round in Open history and drew the ire of the golfing elite, but became a folk hero in the process and, more importantly, showed his family the importance of pursuing your dreams.
Leonard Maltin, in leonardmaltin.com, calls the film “a love letter to dreamers everywhere.” Kyle Smith, in the Wall Street Journal, calls it a “fond and funny exploration of how one ordinary chap discovered renewal on life’s back nine.” Lisa Kennedy, in the New York Times, calls it “the sort of good-hearted movie the director Frank Capra would have liked to have taken a swing at.” Rated PG-13 for smoking and some strong language, “The Phantom of the Open” runs one hour, 46 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door only for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org. For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716-679-1891.
