MAYVILLE — Jay Young of Jamestown uncovered the Mayville Winter Festival Medallion after just two clues were issued in the Medallion Treasure Hunt.

He found the medallion hidden in a planting bed under the sign at Lakeside Park in Mayville.

The Medallion Treasure Hunt had been on hiatus for several years, when a pair of sisters approached the Mayville Winter Festival committee about resurrecting it this year. Michele Smith and Vanessa Deland, co-owners of Tidy Girls LLC of Mayville, wrote a dozen clues and hid the medallion. The treasure hunt prize – a $250 ShopLocalCHQ Gift Card from the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce – was sponsored by LECOM Parkside at Corry.

“We are so appreciative of Michele and Vanessa for the effort they put into this event,” said Shannon Biekarck, Mayville-Chautauqua Community Chamber coordinator. “We were all surprised when the medallion was found so quickly.”

Twenty-six people had registered for the Medallion Treasure Hunt, including Young. While he was pleased to find the medallion, Young also said he felt a bit bad about finding it so quickly, knowing all the work that went into the project.

Starting at $3.50/week.
