FALCONER — Fire broke out at a village business late Monday.

Falconer firefighters were alerted shortly before midnight to a possible fire at 1993 E. Main St., home to Maple Tree Cafe & Ice Cream. Upon entry, crews encountered heavy smoke, and additional volunteer departments were requested to the scene.

A fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes.

An investigation determined the cause to be “a spontaneous combustion of towels which had been exposed to cooking oil prior to being laundered and left piled in a plastic laundry basket,” the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

In a message posted to Facebook, Maple Tree Cafe & Ice Cream stated: “Thank you to all of the fire departments who responded. Thank you to the gentleman who saw the smoke and called 911! Hopefully better days are ahead.”
