The Fredonia-Pomfret Democratic Associatiation announced it is taking applications for two scholarships -- the John F Kennedy Scholarship and the Joseph Sweeny Scholarship -- worth $500 each.
Any high school senior who is a resident of the village of Fredonia or the town of Pomfret may apply. Applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, national origin, disability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or political party affiliation. Completed applications are due by April 15, and can be emailed to fredoniapomfretdems@gmail.com.
The John F. Kennedy a scholarship is being offered based on Kennedy's statement on the importance of each person's public service to their communities.
The Joseph Sweeny $500 scholarship was created in honor of Joe Sweeny's never-ending dedication to public service, education, worker's rights, justice, and equality.
Criteria for both awards will require:
¯ submission of an activity resume that includes information about the candidate's community service activities.
¯ the names and phone numbers of two references who are willing to give a verbal or written recommendation of the candidate's community service.
¯ submission of the answers to the following two questions either in a 1-to-2-minute video or by writing a brief essay (one page, double-spaced, about 250 words): what kind of contribution have you made to your school or greater community -your village or town; what contribution do you hope to make in your community in the future?
