Dunkirk's new Hero Banners to honor veterans are going up.
They are getting placed on the walkway along the waterfront, leading to Memorial Park, said Randy Woodbury, city puablic works director.
Each pole has two banners. There are approximately 117 banners overall.
Some of the program's supporters wanted the banners on Central Avenue or Lake Shore Drive. However, the city doesn't own the poles on Lake Shore Drive. As for Central Avenue, Woodbury has pointed out that the poles are filled with decorations already. These include Christmas decorations and the Central Connection banners that Dunkirk, along with Fredonia and SUNY Fredonia, put on Central Avenue during the summer.
