WESTFIELD -- Braiden McElhaney, a lifelong resident of Chautauqua County and an Eagle Scout, is running for the District 19 seat on the Chautauqua County Legislature.
District 19 district includes Westfield and Ripley.
McElhaney is a graduate of the Westfield Academy and Central School Class of 2020, a former student at Jamestown Community College for social sciences and education, and a current student at Grand Canyon University (online) pursuing a degree in justice studies. McElhaney previously served as an early childcare provider and educator at Campus and Community Children's Center this year and Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. last year. Currently, McElhaney is employed as a community safety officer at the Chautauqua Institution.
As an Eagle Scout and former cub scout, McElhaney volunteered as as a den leader for the same pack he attended as a child, Westfield Cub Scout Pack 201. McElhaney has also served as interim chairman of the former Westfield Community Engagement Collaborative; a committee that was rooted in improving the quality of life for Westfield residents and aimed to strengthen the relationships between the community and its various institutions.
McElhaney said he wants to serve on the legislature to lead an effort toward community revitalization. In an effort combat the increasing number of young students leaving Chautauqua County seeking opportunity somewhere other than the place they grew up, McElhaney said he hopes to put forward plans that will encourage people to stay in Chautauqua County and increasing overall sustainability. Additionally, McElhaney said he wants to help create new jobs and strengthen the economic growth of the region.
"The vision I see for Chautauqua County is rooted in community revitalization," McElhaney said. "This will include jobs, economic growth, and sustainability for our communities. If we can provide good paying jobs in education, healthcare, and renewable energy, we can provide a plethora of opportunity for current and future generations. If we can implement new jobs, economic stability, and clean energy we can give people a reason to stay in Chautauqua County."
McElhaney is running as the Democratic Party's candidate in the race. He will face Frederick Johnson, endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties.
