Silver Creek budget shows a tax decrease

By Braden Carmen 2 min read

SILVER CREEK -- Despite costs rising in most areas throughout everyday life in recent years, the village has done its best to not pile on its residents.

The village of Silver Creek recently approved a 2023-24 budget of $2,657,689 with a tax rate of $12.90 per $1,000 of assessed valuation -- a decrease of 2.37%.

The 2023-24 budget shows $1,039,307 in general fund allocation; $861,366 for the water fund; and $757,016 for the sewer fund. There is no increase to the salaries of village board members.

The village tax decrease follows the proposed Silver Creek Central School District budget representing no tax increase for the upcoming year. The school's rate stayed flat, even with a 2.31% increase to the overall budget.

The village also authorized Trustee Sandra Lindstrom to sign acceptance of a grant from the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth for $5,500. The grant will fund sidewalk improvements for safe walking routes along Webster Street, Knight Street Extension, and Stapf Avenue.

"That was a grant that came about rather abruptly, and (Lindstrom) grabbed the ball and ran with it," said Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg. "(The) $5,500 will go a long way with what we're doing."

The village is also asking for more volunteers to assist with the FeedMore WNY Mobile Food Pantry events each month. The events have been "well-received" each month, according to Hornburg, and the village is in negotiations to have the program continue next year. "It's a very nice program. People are very appreciative of it," Hornburg said.
