Cherry Creek to host Independence Day celebration

By Sue Ann Ford 3 min read

CHERRY CREEK -- The hamlet of Cherry Creek continues its long tradition of one of the biggest Independence Day celebrations in Chautauqua County this weekend.

Beginning Friday morning, the celebration begins with village-wide yard sales. The sales will continue throughout the weekendlong festivities. Sites of the sales will be on maps, which are free and available at Big Eddie's Pizza, the Trillium Lodge and NEHS Hardware.

With the exception of the yard sales, all events will be held at the ball park on Main Street.

Registration for the classic car show begins at 4 p.m. Friday. Always a hit with the public, the car show will have three different classes of entries: cars, trucks and motorcycles. The winners will be selected by popular vote and will be announced toward the end of the show.

The 5 p.m. hour will feature a "sip and paint" session in the pavilion. Sign-ups for the painting session will begin at 4:30 p.m.

"Music with Sally Marsh" will be featured from 4-7 p.m. in the pavilion, with " Music by Devon Payne" entertaining from 7-10 p.m.

One of the highlights of the weekend occurs Saturday at noon, as the parade begins to form on Southside Avenue. The parade will begin at 1 p.m., and proceed from Southside Avenue, up Main Street and to the ball park where it concludes.

One of the most delicious parts of the weekend will be the "Cherry Sweets Baking Contest" that begins at 2 p.m. and will continue to 5 p.m. Entries may be dropped at the ball park. Participants are reminded that no pies requiring refrigeration will be accepted, and pie plates must be clearly labeled.

Walkers Creekside Alpacas will be on display between 2-5 p.m. A chicken barbecue will begin at 3 p.m. in the pavilion hosted by the Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

The "Live Auction" will begin in the large tent at 3:30 p.m. From 7-10 p.m. will be "Wasted Whiskey" to entertain with live music.

The main festivities conclude Saturday night at 10 p.m. with a fireworks display.

Throughout Friday and Saturday there will be food vendors, rides by "Midway Amusements," craft vendors, games, face painting, chainsaw carving demonstrations and a beer/wine tent. Attendees are reminded that no outside alcohol will be allowed on the premises.

The entire weekend of events will conclude Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the "Panther Prowl," a reunion of all PVCS alumni.
