Supporters of the City of Dunkirk Hero Banner program honored Add Lumber owner Fred Dziduch with a plaque at a Saturday morning gathering near the city pier.

"His support and generous donation have helped to make this project possible," said Natalie Luczkowiak, a city councilperson who chairs the Hero Banner Committee.

The City of Dunkirk Hero Banner Program honors the accomplishments and sacrifices of Dunkirk city veterans who fought from the Revolutionary War to the most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The banners look amazingly beautiful along our shoreline, they are large compared to some I have seen in other municipalities, and one can clearly see the names and pictures of all 124 heroes," Luczkowiak said.

She credited the city Department of Public Works with a "marvelous job" in erecting the banners, which extend along the waterfront from Wright Park to the Dunkirk Lighthouse.

"We are seeking major thoroughfares for next year, such as Lake Shore Drive and Central Avenue, when we open up for new applications in January," she added.

Luczkowiak said any questions about the program can get emailed to dunkirkherobanners@yahoo.com.
