NY state Trooper who killed North East man indicted

A New York state trooper who shot and killed a North East, Pa., man in February 2022 has been indicted on charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter.

State Attorney General Letitia James on Monday announced the indictment of Anthony Nigro IV. The state trooper shot James Huber in Buffalo on Feb. 12, 2022.

Nigro, a 15-year veteran, was arraigned in Erie County Supreme Court before Justice William Boller where he pleaded not guilty. He was later released on his own recognizance.

According to James’ Office of Special Investigation, the 38-year-old Huber was spotted driving erratically on Interstate 90 near Buffalo the morning of Feb. 12. Troopers later called off the chase when he exited the interstate.

Huber then stopped his car near the intersection of Washington and East Eagle streets in Buffalo.

Nigro is reported to have approached the car and, during an interaction with Huber, fired his service weapon. Huber, who was not armed, was pronounced dead at the scene.

First-degree manslaughter, a class B violent felony, carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and five years of supervised release.
