Opportunities aplenty for local residents to visit Institution this summer

CHAUTAUQUA — With Chautauqua Institution’s season about to begin, there’s a number of events that local residents may be interested in.

Emily F. Morris, senior vice president and chief brand officer, said the season will begin with Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt performing on Saturday, June 24. The show is already sold out, although someone who buys tickets to stay on the grounds overnight gets to attend that concert.

Some other key performances include Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Melissa Etheridge, Band of Horses, Girl Named Tom, and more.

Some key presenters include Cornell West and Robert George who will be opening the Week 1 season on the theme of Friendship. The week will close with actor Sean Astin who is known for his roles including “The Goonies,” “Rudy,” and “Stranger Things 2.”

Other presenters include David Axelrod, Karl Rove, Mike Huckabee, Robert Woodward, and Dr. Sanjay Gupta with CNN.

Morris notes that it’s difficult for anyone to get to all the presentations they have this summer. Because of this, they have an option for people to stream all of their summer lectures for a flat fee of $56. It does not include entertainment performances. The lectures can be streamed live or watched later, following the conclusion of the presentation.

On July 20 will be the second annual Chautauqua County Day, where residents can enter the gates free of charge. “We will have some special programming, including a panel discussion, sponsored by the Coalition for Chautauqua County Women and Girls, and the Jamestown YWCA,” Morris said.

Sundays continue to be free to enter, with parking free before 2 p.m. Shannon Rozner, Senior Vice President for Community Relations and General Counsel, noted that on Sundays, there’s a community activities fair, with a tent set up in Bestor Plaza, populated by Institution community organizations. “There’s at least couple dozen groups that people can involved with and engage on a different level and get more deeply into an area that interests them and all of those community groups will have a tent every Sunday afternoon,” she said.

And for those who don’t make it to the grounds, will still have an opportunity to hear the sounds of Chautauqua. Morris noted that the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra will be performing for first time in Jamestown. Under the baton of Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz, the CSO will perform the Music of Billy Joel on Aug. 17 at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now at the Reg.
