Vehicle strikes utility pole on Central Ave.

An alarming event took place on Wednesday afternoon on Central Avenue in Dunkirk.

Shortly after noon on Wednesday, a vehicle veered off Central Avenue in Dunkirk near Green Street and struck a utility pole.

An eyewitness of the incident reported seeing the driver of the red Ford sedan hunched over the steering wheel as the vehicle’s speed gradually decreased.

The vehicle veered off the road and up onto the sidewalk, then came to an abrupt halt as it struck the utility pole. At that point, the witness called 911.

The incident occurred within sight of the Big Dipper Ice Cream Parlor. Central Avenue was momentarily blocked off by first responders, but the street was reopened shortly before 1 p.m.

The Dunkirk Fire Department, Dunkirk Police Department, and ALSTAR EMS responded to the scene, and the driver of the vehicle was transported to Brooks-TLC Hospital via Alstar.

No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the incident.
