Grant OK’d for Dunkirk Farmers’ Market pavilion

Construction is imminent on the new Dunkirk Farmers Market pavilion area, with the city Common Council approving a grant for it this month.

The $50,000 outlay comes from the New York State Farmers Market Resiliency Grant Program.

Vince DeJoy, city planning and development director, said Monday a contractor and materials supplier for the pavilion are lined up and a groundbreaking should occur in the next couple of weeks.

The city Planning Board approved the site plan in May. Drawn up by city Code Enforcement Officer Glenn Christner, the plan is for a pavilion with 10 stalls for vendors, with each stall 10 feet wide.

The pavilion is set for the corner of Ruggles and Wright streets, where the market currently takes place in the open air.

EJ Hayes, Dunkirk’s deputy planning director, said in May that a pavilion for the market “is going to be huge for the neighborhood.” The pavilion might allow the market, currently open once a week from June to October, to expand.

He added that it should be safer for vendors and customers, as sellers will be further from the street than they are now and will be protected by a structure.

Starting at $3.50/week.
