SHERIDAN — Readers of the OBSERVER got a special shout out from a Sheridan Town Board member at a recent meeting.

Town Board Member Colleen Yerico revealed at the meeting that a summer Youth Recreation program in the town started July 3. Yerico thanked the public for its overwhelming response to an OBSERVER article regarding the need for workers this summer.

“We now have a rec program because we had countless people see the article and come forward,” Yerico said.

As of the May monthly meeting of the Town Board, only one qualified applicant had applied for the program, while the town needed at least four adults to supervise the events. Yerico said at the time that the program was at risk of being canceled if enough qualified applicants were not found.

In the time since, the town hired a full staff. Yerico has met with the staff multiple times and calls the staff “a great group.”

“They all are excited. It’s full steam ahead and that’s great,” Yerico said.

The Town Board approved the payment of $2,750 to Sheridan Memorial Field Inc. for its Youth Recreation program to be held at Memorial Field and its facilities on the premises. The Town Board also approved a $300 donation to the City of Dunkirk for its Independence Day celebration and fireworks show.

Starting at $3.50/week.
