The Darwin R. Barker Library, located at 7 Day St., Fredonia, has announced a number of upcoming programs.
Local artists are invited to submit their artwork for display at the library. Mediums include photography, painting, illustration, mixed media, jewelry, small sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, glass arts and fabric arts. A creative writing workshop will take place at the library today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Bring a pen or pencil and a notebook and get ready to write. Explore different themes, play with words, and meet other writers. No registration is required.
On Saturday at 2 p.m. the Barker Library Book Club will meet to discuss "the Library Book," by Susan Orlean.
The library is coordinating The Memory Jar Project, inspired by Deborah Marcero's picture book "In a Jar." Stop at the library to pick up an everyday ordinary empty baby food jar and an instruction sheet. Fill it with memories and return it to the library to participate in this community art project. Participants are encouraged to think of places, people, dreams, adventures and remembrances to include in their jars. Everyone's jar will be placed on display in an exhibit case in the library. Completed jars must be returned by Aug. 12. Any library patron of any age is welcome to participate in this project.
The library will continue offering individual computer tutoring in August on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Registration is recommended for this free service. Specify needs. Dell laptops are available to borrow. For details, call 716- 672-8051.
The adult summer reading problem "Read Around the World" continues through Aug. 31. No registration is required, but participants must pick up a reading log at the library and read a book from each continent. Return logs by Sept. 5. Prizes are available.
The CCLS Roadtrip is a chance to check out any or all of the 38 Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County libraries, to explore, have fun, learn and earn prizes. A drawing will take place Sept. 1.
The Barker Library will host three renowned authors in September and October – Jack Cashill on Sept. 9 at noon, Robert Brighton on Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. and Wendy Corsi Staub on Oct. 7 at noon.
