As a new school year approaches, the Dunkirk City School District is enthusiastically embracing its motto, "Whatever it takes."
Superintendent Michael Mansfield explained that the district's often-overlooked tagline is actually quite an important commitment -- one he hopes will be made by all community members.
"This school year, we are asking students, parents/guardians, teachers, neighbors, and business owners to join us in doing 'whatever it takes' to ensure our students' success," he said.
Family and community engagement is more than just attending school events, he explained.
"Each of us plays a significant role in their experience and growth," he continued. "In finding common ground, we can break down barriers, improve accessibility, and establish two-way communication. They say it takes a village to raise a child; in our case, it takes a small city."
The primary focus for the district this school year is literacy, and Mansfield says that the goal is for every student to be reading at grade level as they enter 3rd grade.
"The importance of functional literacy for our students cannot be understated; it is fundamental to their success in school and beyond." he added.
The district will kick off the new year at the Back to School Bash on today from 4 to 7 p.m. Lawn signs emblazoned with "Ready to do Whatever it Takes" will be distributed to the community at the event. Volunteers will also be on hand to assist families with downloading the district's new mobile app.
"We look forward to engaging families and community members in meaningful dialogue so we can learn from each other," said Mansfield.
Students start classes Thursday, Sept. 7.
