Lawmaker plans to honor fallen North East firefighter

A condolence resolution will soon be introduced honoring the life and service of a volunteer firefighter killed recently in the line of duty in North East, Pa.

State Sen. Daniel Laughlin, R-Erie, introduced a co-sponsorship memorandum for the resolution on Monday in the state Senate. The final version of the resolution is being drafted.

Giles, a member of the Fuller Hose Co., was assisting the Pennsylvania State Police following a two-vehicle crash when he was struck and killed by an Erie, Pa., resident, who was reportedly driving without a license at a high rate of speed. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Dawann Simmons, has been charged with homicide by vehicle and accidents involving death or injury while not licensed.

Giles served in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany from 1989-1993. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post 4789, the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph’s Club and East Erie Loyal Order of the Moose 593.

“His love was being a member of the Fuller Hose Company #1 in North East, where he served as a firefighter and performed fire police duties,” Laughlin wrote in his co-sponsorship memorandum. “Unfortunately, Shawn was tragically killed by a speeding motorist while directing traffic at an accident scene. The unimaginable loss is felt keenly by his family, colleagues, friends and community. Shawn died while selflessly serving the citizens of this Commonwealth. His sacrifice underscores how our Pennsylvania Volunteers put their lives on the line for our safety each and every day.”
