Marcus Buchanan, candidate for Chautauqua County Legislature District One in Dunkirk, offered his concurrence with the recent position taken by city officials against the proposed increase in landfill fees.
"I believe that fees are nothing more than taxes in disguise," Buchanan stated. "I proudly join with all Dunkirk officials opposing yet another increase in user fees for the County landfill. Last year's increase resulted in a subsequent increase in the tipping fees for Dunkirk garbage customers.
"There is no need for an increase. The landfill account is already operating with a surplus. The County can not continue to increase fees, and the tax levy year after year.
"We need a visible representative and a proven positive voice for Dunkirk. I am active in this community, meeting with the people daily. They've had enough of the increases, and I agree. Somebody needs to start looking out for Dunkirk."
