Volunteer training planned at Centaur Stride

Current class members include Savannah Chicora, instructor; and Mary, Lynette, Debbie and Elizabeth, all participants.

SHERMAN — The next Volunteer Training Classes for Centaur Stride begin on Wednesday and will run for four consecutive weeks through Nov 15 at 8488 Jones Road. Centaur Stride is a not-for-profit Therapeutic Horseback Riding Facility providing services for more than 30 years.

From 5 to 6 p.m., this program includes lessons to teach volunteers how you can best help the organization with horses and riders with disabilities. It includes working with the horses on the ground with grooming, horse handling, leading, sidewalking and on horseback to better learn to communicate with the horses.

There is a $40 non-refundable registration fee (first to pay registration gets preference) and there is limited space. This program is sponsored by the Lake Shore Savings and Loan Community Reinvestment Fund and the Live Like Luca Fund through the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation.

After completing the classes, participants will be qualified to help in many ways. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old and physically able to be independent on the ground, on the horse and able to safely help others.

Adults are encouraged to register, as Centaur Stride frequently needs help with field trips and adult riders who come during the day when teen volunteers are in school. Call 716-326-4318 to register.
