Jamestown Municipal Building lease renewed

MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County is renewing its lease with Jamestown to house its Mental Hygiene Department, although not all elected officials support the renewal.

During the December legislature meeting, county lawmakers voted 16-2 to for the county to renew the lease of 9,103 square feet of office space on the fifth floor of the Jamestown Municipal Building, 200 East Third St. for use by county Mental Hygiene personnel. The county will be charged $14.60 per square foot.

Voting against the resolution were legislators Dan Pavlock, R-Ellington, and Bob Bankoski, D-Dunkirk.

“Last year we had some similar concerns that weren’t remedied in this year’s lease agreement, and yet we’re moving forward with some of the same issues that I still have concerns about. One is that we have leaky roofs and the department has been issued citations for this,” said Pavlock. “We’re also leasing space that we are not able to utilize because of the conditions. I had a hard time agreeing to another lease agreement that really wasn’t that beneficial and we still have some underlying issues.”

Bankoski did not comment before he voted against the lease.

The new lease takes effect Jan. 1 and will be for one year. During committee meetings, members with the Mental Hygiene Department said they are looking for a new location, but are having a hard time because of the size they need.

In December, the Jamestown City Council approved a resolution to have the roof repaired, although the work is not expected to take place during the winter months.
