SOUTH DAYTON - A capital improvement project at Pine Valley Central School has been approved by voters.
The voting results from the community came in at 147 yes and 54 no.
James Przepasniak, interim superintendent, said the project now may take some time to complete.
"This is very exciting for the Pine Valley community," Przepasniak said. "Final design submission to the New York State Education Department is a long process. Approval could be spring 2025 with the bulk of the construction work starting that summer. Hopefully, the project work will be completed in late 2026 -- that's our best estimate."
Pine Valley's capital improvement project focuses on areas of safety and educational program spaces, including; for the Elementary School -- a New Early Learning parking lot with parent pick-up and drop-off spaces, replacing baseball field fencing and adding a mow strip, putting in air conditioning at the Main Office and Nurses Offices, replacing the asphalt access path to the playgrounds, site upgrades such as site drainage improvements and a sanitary lift station replacement, and replacing a classroom rooftop unit.
For the junior and senior high school there will be; a new kitchen construction and faculty room relocation, auditorium improvements including new ADA compliant seats, replacing obsolete theater and house lighting, sound, projection equipment, and Audio Visual systems, replacing existing auditorium theatrical rigging equipment, replacing deteriorated sanitary piping, basement water mitigation and adding a privacy wall in the Girls' locker room.
Other items planning to be worked on include; in the bus garage -- replacing existing windows, replacing existing heating and exhaust ventilation systems, electric service upgrades for future Electric Vehicle bus charging; in the Water Treatment Building there will be new exterior Americans with Disabilities Act compliant restrooms near athletic fields and there will be a replacing of a door and existing roof hatch railing in the press box.
Gordon Jones Architects and Campus Construction Management have the responsibility for the design and approval process. The Pine Valley project team will meet in January to develop and evaluate the timeline for the entire process.
Przepasniak said the district will keep the community informed as planning continues and the project gets underway, emphasizing that the district is grateful to the Board of Education, students, administrators, staff, parents and the community for their input and participation.
"There is much more work ahead, and I know Pine Valley will be in good hands with recently appointed Superintendent Shanda DuClon guiding the district through the next steps," Przepasniak said.
DuClon officially assumes district leadership the first week of January. The Board of Education will adopt the results on Jan. 18, 2024, as per its agenda. Project bonding and board action is scheduled in the spring.
