A State University of New York at Fredonia graduate is shining brightly while serving our nation.
The U.S. Army School of Music named Spc. Margaret Suarez, a flutist with the District of Columbia National Guard 257th Army Band, the National Guard Army Bands Soldier of the Year for 2023. The purpose of The Army Bands Soldier/NCO of the Year competition identifies those Army musicians who best embody the concept of highly trained, disciplined, holistically fit experts and professionals.
As a flutist for the 257th Army Band, Suarez performs in concert missions throughout the National Capital Region, parades, and accepts public requests annually. She’s also served as a Recruitment and Retention Battalion recruiting assistant, improving the organization’s social media reach, and increasing the number of D.C. National Guard recruits.
“I’m committed to my craft, but also my organization,” Suarez said. “Years ago, at the nudging of my fiancé someone gave me an opportunity and I want to do the same. We have a lot of talented people within our ranks, but the future of the armed forces lies within recruiting. New recruits increase our force structure and therefore enhance our ability to defend our nation. We seek individuals that are ready to uphold the honor and responsibility that comes with wearing the uniform.”
Suarez enlisted into the D.C. National Guard in June 2022. She holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from SUNY Fredonia.
