Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES is proud to announce the awarding of a $775,620 grant from the USDA Rural Utilities Service to bolster Distance Learning opportunities in 11 component school districts.
The grant will play a crucial role in advancing educational access and quality for students in some of the area's most remote districts, addressing the unique challenges faced by schools in rural communities. The funds will be dedicated to upgrading and establishing Distance Learning infrastructure and upgrades, ensuring students have equitable access to high-quality education, regardless of their geographic location.
In addition to being able to share live course instruction between different schools, districts that enroll in E2CCB Distance Learning services benefit from a variety of online offerings, from Class-To-Class Collaborations that connect classrooms from across the state for fun and interactive activities to Diversity and Cultural Connections that provide authentic conversations with people from differing cultures with unique traditions and experiences thus broadening students' global knowledge.
"In preparation for this grant opportunity, we worked with 11 of our rural component districts currently enrolled in our Distance Learning program to evaluate needs and see how we could improve the educational experience for students," said Bryan Olson, E2CCB Coordinator of Distance Learning. "Together, over the next two years, we will coordinate the purchase, installation, and management of new Distance Learning equipment for districts identified in the grant. The work ahead of us is truly exciting and will allow E2CCB to improve its Distance Learning services for students in our component districts."
The USDA grant-funded project aims to implement state-of-the-art technology solutions, including improved video conferencing capabilities and interactive learning tools to enhance the Distance Learning experience. These enhancements will facilitate real-time virtual classrooms and enable collaborative and engaging educational experiences for students and teachers.
“This grant represents a significant investment in the future of education for our students in the rural areas we serve," said Bryna Moritz, E2CCB Deputy Superintendent. "It will empower us to enhance education delivery through modern technology and bridge the digital divide, making educational opportunities more accessible and inclusive for all.”
Depending on the district’s needs, the funds will upgrade audio/visual equipment, purchase Zoom room carts for portability, or create and repurpose board rooms or auditoriums into new DL spaces.
The 11 component school districts benefiting from this grant include Cassadaga, Falconer, Forestville, Frewsburg, Gowanda, Holland, Panama, Pine Valley, Sherman, Southwestern, and Westfield Academy. Eligibility requirements for the grant required the district to be enrolled in the E2CCB Distance Learning service and receive a specified USDA-designated rurality score to showcase the need.
