Marketplace event May 19 benefits lighthouse

Get Ready! Get Set! Let’s go shopping!

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Junque & Disorderly Antiques, Toys & Collectibles Market. The May 19 event will take place in Floral Hall at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, 1089 Central Avenue, Dunkirk.

This will be a marketplace of quality antiques, vintage toys and collectibles. It is not your typical flea market. There won’t be garage sale leftovers or pallets of big box returns; just the quality merchandise you always hope to find. With more than 50 booths, shop with vendors from the local area, but also from three different counties in Pennsylvania and four counties in Western New York.

Some of what you’ll find include crocks, pottery, furniture, art, advertising, jewelry, vintage clothing and accessories, ephemera, antique tools, store displays, linens, glassware, clocks, pocket watches, pocket knives, militaria, postcards, books, primitives and oddities. From the vintage toy vendors, you’ll find slot cars, model kits, dolls, Star Wars, lunchboxes, pressed steel trucks, pedal cars, farm toys and much more. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is just $3 and “Early Bird” admission (starts at 8:30) is $10.

All monies raised from the admissions go to the Dunkirk Lighthouse & Veterans Park Museum. The Lighthouse is situated on the shores of Lake Erie and was first established in 1827. The light acted in tandem with a pier head beacon to guide ships to the safety of the Dunkirk Harbor. It was refitted with a 3rd-order Fresnel (pronounced “Fraynel”) lens and lantern in 1857 at a cost of $10,000 and was imported from Paris. In 1875-1876, a 61-foot stone tower and a beautiful Victorian residence were constructed to replace the original tower.

These structures still stand today and are available to tour plus the beautiful grounds located at Point Gratiot. The view is spectacular from atop the tower. In addition to touring the lighthouse and grounds, there is an extensive military museum representing every branch of service of the United States.

Current touring hours are May, June, September and October 10 a.m. to 2 pm. and July and August 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last tour takes place one hour before closing. For informaton regarding the Antique Market, caall 814-779-5553 or 716-969-2211 and the Dunkirk Lighthouse 716-366-5050
