‘Connect Dunkirk’ group hears latest on train industry

A lunch at the historic Brewerie at Union Station in Erie, Pa., was recently held by members of the "Connect Dunkirk" Amtrak Committee.
An update was provided of the Empire State Passengers Association annual meeting in Schenectady of April 6. The new "Airo" train sets, ordered by Amtrak from Siemens Mobility built in Sacramento, Calif. are to begin operating on the west coast in 2026. A new Siemens Mobility facility in Lexington, N.C., is to begin production of train sets in January. "Airo" train sets are planned for operation in New York State in 2029 - 2030.
In the annual meeting, there was a discussion to reinstate the late afternoon train from Western New York to New York City, removed during covid, and originate it daily from Cleveland, Ohio.
Proposed is a morning train from New York City to Cleveland. These trains would use the new "Airo" train sets and also be able to serve the new downtown Buffalo Exchange Street station and could have a station stop at Dunkirk.
A "Lakeshore Rail Summit" is to be held Thursday, June 13 at 1 p.m. in Erie, Pennsylvania. Those interested in attending should view online "Lakeshore Rail Summit" for information and to register for the event.
Preparations are being made to have a display table with rail safety and New York State rail travel information again this year at Floral Hall during the Chautauqua County Fair.
