Dunkirk man charged after police pursuit

A Dunkirk man is facing numerous charges after a vehicle pursuit Wednesday afternoon.

City police say they were alerted to a New York State Police chase of a vehicle in the area. The vehicle was last seen heading toward Route 5 and Willow Road.

Shortly after Dunkirk Police observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed east on Lake Shore Drive East near Brigham Road.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle however it failed to comply and continued south onto Brigham Road and then east onto East Second Street. The vehicle then turned into a driveway at an address on Woodrow Avenue and the operator, identified as Justin G. Schreier, 29, exited the vehicle and fled on foot from officers.

A brief foot pursuit ensued and Schreier was taken into custody after a taser deployment. Schreier was transported back to Dunkirk Police headquarters where he was processed and charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and several vehicle and traffic law infractions.

During this time, it was discovered that Schreier was on parole and also had an active extraditable warrant from Mercer County, Pa. Contact was made with authorities and Schreier was additionally charged with being a fugitive from justice and held at Dunkirk headquarters pending arraignment.
