Dunkirk schools gear up for budget vote
The Dunkirk Board of Education went over some 2025-26 budget items in an extremely brief meeting Tuesday.
“I’m not even going to stand up,” Superintendent Michael Mansfield joked.
“The state budget is late but the rumor is out that they reached an agreement, so we should be getting our state aid runs… our official revenue report before the end of the week, they are saying,” Mansfield continued.
That essentially ended his presentation. The Board of Education met for about five minutes publicly before going into executive session to discuss contract negotiations.
The board did make some personnel moves. It accepted the resignations of secondary school teachers Joshua Case and Todd Fiore and social worker Marissa Sorrentino. The board also hired Jillian Banville as a secondary school teacher aide and granted tenure to reading instructor Melanie Dolce.
Dunkirk school district residents vote on the 2025-26 budget May 20. The budget has no tax increase.
Voters will also consider adding a new capital reserve fund. Finally, they will fill two Board of Education seats currently held by Stephen Helwig and Marcus Buchanan. According to District Clerk Tara Jakse, Helwig and Karen Willis submitted petitions to run for the two seats. Candidates had until the end of Wednesday to submit petitions.
